Photo - Track in Tube Station
Track at tube station showing the suicide pit
(first installed in the 1930s) to assist with removal of the bodies of persons attempting
suicides. The low floors of tube cars made extraction of bodies difficult and time
consuming.
The rail is mounted on wooden blocks set into
concrete to provide the rigidity needed to retain the very tight clearances. Note
also the use of flat bottom rail, not yet standard on London Underground.
